Dr Thangavel completed his undergraduate dental training at the University of Otago in New Zealand, and went on to complete his Doctor of Clinical Dentistry (Prosthodontics) at the University of Sydney. He is a member of the Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons (RACDS) and a number of professional associations.

Dr Thangavel also has an interest in continuing education programs for students and dentists. This includes lecturing and mentorship for Charles Sturt University and University of Sydney Implant diploma programs.
