An annual charity bike ride that delivers hope

Filling The Gap volunteer Dr Laurie Kobler raises thousands for charity

25 May 2021

Filling The Gap volunteer Dr Laurie Kobler has again participated in the annual Ride for Hope – raising thousands for a good cause in the annual bike ride.

Held on 7-8 May, the 150km charity bike ride event supported ONE80TC. Now in its 21st year, the annual Ride for HOPE (Hold On Pain Ends) is ONE80TC’s major annual fundraising event and supports up to around 80 riders.

Founded by Phil Latz in 2001, the aim was to create a great cycling event focused on a great cause to help turn around the lives of those caught in substance abuse and addiction.

“The work they do is life-impacting and I have been privileged to witness the results close-up,” Dr Kobler said. â€śWhen I hear the individual testimonies of the men and women participating in the program I never fail to be moved.

“It takes a lot of effort to complete the training and then the actual cycling event (150kms on the bike), but that is nothing compared to the challenges faced by these men and women on their journeys to regain some self-worth and a valuable place in our society. I’m glad to have been able to support them each year and hope to be able to continue doing this.”

Dr Kobler’s altruistic endeavours extend further to his volunteering for the Filling The Gap dental charity. He regularly does a session for the FTG charities each fortnight where some of the one80tc patients are treated as well as patients from many other charitable organisations.

This year, ADA NSW CEO Stes Stengos from ADA NSW Branch donated $1,000 on behalf of the ADA NSW Branch to support the ride and Dr Kobler’s valuable work. Dr Kobler’s raised over $7,000 this year, all of which goes straight to the charity’s work, along with the funds raised by the many other participants.

Congratulations Dr Kobler on a fantastic achievement!
