World Diabetes Day (WDD) was created in 1991 by IDF and the World Health Organisation in response to growing concerns about the escalating threat posed by diabetes and the need for awareness of signs, symptoms and risk factors. Over 425 million people are currently living with diabetes, and 1 in 2 people currently living with type 2 diabetes are undiagnosed.

In the lead up to WDD, we interviewed Dr Jerry Brown – the first dentist in the world to receive the credential of certified Diabetes Educator. Dr Brown, who has type 1 diabetes, outlines a series of practical considerations for patients with diabetes. These include the signs and symptoms dentists can learn to recognise in patients, risk factors in treating patients with diabetes, the role of the dentist within the interdisciplinary team, and communication techniques to employ with diabetic patients and associated healthcare professionals.
