About 80 first year students from the University of Sydney’s first year Doctor of Dental Medicine recently gained a valuable insight into the dental profession at an inaugural event held on 16 April by ADA NSW.

The ‘Explore the Australian Dental Association New South Wales’ event saw students meet CPD staff and tour the clinical training centre at the organisation’s St Leonards offices on Sydney’s north shore.

They also discussed opportunities in mentoring and volunteering offered by the organisation, met ADA NSW communications staff and discovered more about the organisation’s library and other information resources.

ADA NSW group general manager Abby Corrigall, who helped organise the event, said it would help further prepare undergraduates for life in dentistry.

“ADA NSW’s overarching goal is to help our members become world-leading dentists,” she said. “This starts with undergraduates.

“We wanted to be proactive and let undergraduates know that we are with them every step of their professional life. CPD is also vital to our members’ knowledge as dental professionals, so it is vital we let undergraduates know the opportunities open to them.”

The students visited the organisation’s podcast studios and explored networking opportunities at the event. Prizes including Airpods, Apple music subscriptions and gift vouchers were also donated by event sponsors Guild Insurance and Cutcher and Neale.

Despite the pandemic, ADA NSW has seen membership reach a 15-year high, with a 30 per cent increase in new members.

“The past year has shown it’s vital for the dental profession to unite,” Corrigall said. “ADA NSW is always investigating new ways to best represent and help our members. We thank everyone who came along and helped make the event a terrific success.”
