Maintaining good oral health is essential for senior Australians to prevent common conditions like tooth decay and gum disease.

Poor oral health can lead to:

  • Pain
  • Tooth loss
  • Malnutrition, which can increase the risk of infection, falls and fractures
  • Higher risk of cardiovascular disease, stroke and aspiration pneumonia
  • Complications in managing illnesses such as diabetes, chronic heart failure and respiratory diseases.

Dry mouth becomes more common with increasing age and can be caused by medication. Dry mouth increases the risk of developing tooth decay, gum disease and oral infections, and can affect function, comfort, and denture retention.

Brushing teeth twice daily with fluoride toothpaste and a soft toothbrush (with support as needed) and regular dental visits are key strategies for maintaining overall health and preventing these issues.
