As soon as a child’s first tooth appears (around 6 – 12 months), they should be cleaned twice a day with a soft toothbrush. Children should be limiting sugary foods and drinks, encouraged to drink tap water and parents should assist with brushing children’s teeth until age eight.

While two minute brushing is a general recommendation, the time taken to adequately brush a child’s teeth would vary depending on the number of teeth present (for example, a one-year-old with only a few teeth will not need a full two minute brushing).

Their first dental visit should be by the time the first baby teeth come through or by one year of age and at least every 12 months. This will help prevent tooth decay and set up a habit of lifelong dental health.
