Protecting healthy development and maintaining good oral health of children is equally important.
A recent Journal of Dental Research study examined the effects of early childhood exposures to water fluoridation at Australian levels, measuring children’s emotional, behavioural and functional development.
The study found that there was no association between exposure to fluoridated water in Australia and the emotional, behavioural or functional development of children. Low household income, identifying as Indigenous, and having a neurodevelopmental diagnosis were associated with poorer scores.
Exposure to fluoridated water during the first 5 years of life was not associated with altered measures of child emotional and behavioural development or executive functioning. Community water fluoridation in Australia is a safe and effective way of maintaining oral health.
